Ok, so this is what excites me about the new iPhone OS 4.

Multitasking - long overdue and will certainly silence a few iPhone critics

Folders - get your apps more organized. you can now have up to 2,160 apps

Wallpapers - just fun.

Gaming - getting more and more social on the iDevice.

iAd - Apple promotes advertising as an interactive user experience isntead of just the old, boring, traditional banner.

Looks like Steve is really expanding his market. From the unexpected gaming contenter, he now launches his little device as a full-on social gaming experience. I guess we can thank Facebook and Zynga for that. And his iAd program is just like an answer to Google's Android. Google goes ahead and challenges Apple on the smart phone market and Apple talks back by going into advertising. Oh, the tech politics.

The iPhone OS 4 has a ton of other important features geared for business but I don't really care about that since I don't use my device for that at all. =)

Availability will be later this year - summer for iPhone and iPod Touch and Fall for the iPad.

Understandable but disappointing, only iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3g will have multi-tasking with older-generation devices just getting "many things" but no multitasking.

Well that sucks. Only the latest generation devices will the the long-overdue multi-tasking feature. This is a little understandable since this latest generation devices have more processing power but still, very disappointing.

This will be avaialable this Summer for iPhone and iPod Touch and this Fall for the iPad.

Steve is now on advertising or iAd.

Steve says it for developers to continue making great apps that are free, understandable. He says that he plans to inject ads within apps and show then between time intervals. Very understandable that they would work on this since advertising rakes in a lot of money too.

Steve shows off new and more interactive apps "using HTML 5." Its like an app within an app. Ads can have videos, games and images and all that.

They're promoting ads as an interactive experience rather than the traditional annoying banner. I like it.

Aside from multitasking and folders, another feature on the iPhone OS 4 is its new and improved Gaming service.

iPhone boasts of its wide range of gaming and entertainment titles. Compared to DS and PSP, there’s 4321 games on the DS and 2477 on the PSP. This of course includes thousands of fart apps, funny sound apps and crap like that. But still, 50,000. They're moving onto social gaming on the iPhone. I'm thinking challenging, playing with friends, online leader boards and stuff like that. They also said they have an "achievement" system.

Aside from multitasking, iPhone OS 4 will also have folder support.

No longer will you need to swipe and swipe to launch applications from different corners of your iPhone or iPod Touch. You just place them on a folder and a few taps will launch the application you want.

Previsouly, your device can hold 180 apps, with this folder addition, it can now hold a whopping 2,160 apps.

I have asked in a previous post if iPhone OS 4 Will Multitask? Today, we find out that it will.

I am following Gizmodo's live blog on the iPhone OS 4 conference.

They have confirmed that the iPhone OS4 will indeed mutli-task. This will silence at least a few iPhone critics out there for sure.

You can jump from one app to another by tapping the Home button twice. A bar will appear at the bottom with all the running apps, tap which one you need. Isn't it kinda like the Win task bar? Anyway, any app you leave and come back to will run from the state you left it. Nice.

iPhone OS 4 Will Multitask?

Apple is certainly not slowing down. After the launch of the iPad, they are already teasing us with the release of the iPhone OS 4.

All the big sources (Gizmodo, Engadget, Macrumors) are saying the same thing: Multitasking. This gets Apple fans very excited since the only multitasking we've seen so far on these devices is the music player running in the background, if I'm not mistaken. That is, of course, if you don't jailbreak. Speaking of which, jailbreak masters certainly have their work cut out for them with new hardware (iPad) and software coming out in rapid succession.

Apparently, no amount of napkin jokes can stop the iPad.

Mashable reports that over 300,000 units of the iPad was sold on the first day. Also, 250,000 eBooks were downloaded from the iBookstore during the first day. One million apps were downloaded on the iPad too.

Apple fanaticism has trumped over endless criticisms about how the iPad is "incapable." And with this kind of response, you can bet it will just get bigger. With the jailbreak community waiting for a jailbreak solution and with the iPad 3G coming in a few months, Apple fans are not running out of enthusiasm anytime soon.

iFarm App Is Fun

Recently got the iFarm App. It is really fun and promising.

With the massive success of Farmville on Facebook, farming games on our favorite mp3 player is just sure to follow. As a matter of fact, I am quite surprised that something like this didn't come out sooner.

You have to be connected to WiFi for the iPod Touch. I don't know if you can play through network connections in the iPhone. Controls are very intuitive and there is very minimal lag.

What is very good about this game is that you would have everything you'd expect from your regular Facebook virtual farming game (with correct reasoning that this is a mobile version.)

What I find hard though is that if in case I forget to harvest and run out of money on early stages of the game, it'll be very hard to recover. I'd have to wait and see if I win daily lotteries to get some money.

Overall, this is a recommended game for all those of you who are fans of virtaul farming. Even for those who are not, this is still a must get. It is free as of now.

Apple Should Market iPhone and iPod Touch Themes

This has been a lingering thought for a while. Why is Apple not offering personalized themes for the iPhone and iPod Touch? Is the image of that plain black screen so strong that Apple is marketing and investing on it so much?

Lets face it, though not the main one, having customized themes for their devices is one of the reasons that people jailbreak their devices. And worse for Apple, even if a user is not planning to get pirated software through jailbreaking, that gate is opened for him anyway.

I mean, Apple can still generate revenue by selling premiun themes to users on the AppStore or through iTunes. Why are they holding off and still pushing that plain black screen to users? One of their key demographics are teenagers and this kind of customization will surely be a hit to the age-group.

Blackra1n Jailbreak Issues

So so there have been some issues with the Blackra1n download for jailbreaking. The blackra1n mod has some hiccups but nothing major that can spoil the massively successful launch of the jailbreak app by George Hotz or Geohot.

Here are some of the things I found on jailbreak forums and vidoes accross the internet.

The jailbreak is for 3.1.2 firmware. If you have other firmware versions, try purplera1n or redsn0w.
Do not install Cydia, Rock and Icy at the same time. Install them one at a time.
If you have the iPod Touch 3G, do not turn off your device or let the battery get drained after the jailbreak. If the device is turned off, the jailbreak will be gone and you wil have to jailbreak again. (not that its gonna take long LOL)
If you get stuck in DFU mode, just close the program and unplug the device and hold the Home and Power button at the same time until your device comes to again. Try agian.

Subscribe to my reader at the bottom for updates on any issues on blackra1n. If you want a more stable jailbreak, you can wait for the Dev Team and get redsn0w.

Just save this file on your computer and then launch yout iTunes and connect your device. Hold Shift + Click on Restore. You will then be prompted to look for a file. Just locate the .ipsw file and hit ok. Enjoy the latest firmware.

Clicking on Check For Update also works but it is recommended to choose Restore. Just make sure that all your data are backed up.

Go to blackra1n.com for the jailbreak. Thats with a "1" and not blackrain. There is a download button at the bottom of the huge picture. This is regarded as the universal jailbreak tool and will jailbreak any iPhone or iPod Touch known today.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n. As far as donations go, they are much appreciated, but not until after blackra1n works for you. I never ask for donations before the tool is released.

Warning 3g and 3gs unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team's offerings. Also blackra1n doesn't hacktivate.

iTwinge - iPhone Keyboard. The first question that went into my mind was why? The idea seemed bright enough and interesting at first look, but I had lots of thoughts why this accessory is unnessesarry.

The keyboard is like a sleeve that fits on your iPhone. It then provides a physical keyboard as opposed to the on-screen keyboard on the iPhone. Its a heaven-sent for those new to on-screen keyboards. Typing on the keybaord is very hard for new users as the screen does not offer resistance and you just have to check the screen if you have typed the characters.

But again, I think its stupid.

1. Its not like you can use this everytime, all the time. Its a pain to put it on and take it off everytime you type something.

2. It does not support landscape typing which is easier as it provides bigger keys and a more visible keyboard.

3. It beats the purpose of being a full-touch screen phone.

4. Most likely, you can't use it with other cases, so it makes your device less protected.

To be fair, it is a little hard to migrate from a physical keyboard to an on-screen one but its not THAT hard. There is absolutely no call to purchase something like this.

~~A lot of~~ Some buzz was generated when the supposed iPod Touch killer came out. Let's take a look at what this gizmo packs and see if it stacks up to the mighty iPod Touch.

The following are what sets the Zune HD apart from the iPod Touch (in my opinion). I'm thinking of doing a side-by-side soon. But lets see for now:

To create an iTunes App Store account without a credit card please follow the steps below. In order to create an account without a credit card, you must make sure you are in the App Store, not the iTunes Store.

If you already have an account, choose Store > Sign Out.
Pick your country from the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes Store homepage.
If your country also has an iTunes Store, you'll need to navigate to the App Store by clicking on the App Store link from the menu on the left. If not, proceed to step 4.
Important: Before proceeding to the next step, you must purchase a free application by clicking 'Get App'.
Click create new account.
Click Continue.

One of the announcements of the recently concluded Apple conference is the availability of the latest update for the iPod Touch OS.

iPod Touch OS 3.1 Available from Apple. It boasts Genius mixes for songs and Genius recommendation for your Apps. It also has peer-to-peer gaming support for friends nearby and far away.

Also, you can now purchase directly from the iTunes store on your device via WiFi.

Its included for devices purchased after September 9. Its a free upgrade for those with OS 3.0 and $4.95 fee for others.

Here is to hoping that this'll fix the WiFi troubles with 3.0.

With Steve Jobs heading the Apple Conference this year, Apple fans are excited and waiting for really exciting news on the Apple world. Awaited Apple iPod Touch 3G Information include some possible improvements for the next Touch.

The Nano was a an instant star when they announced it had a video camera, FM tuning and more. We had thought that with these improvements, the Touch is going to have a microwave oven in it or something.

Wrong.

The iPod Touch fans (including me) felt a little let down with what followed. We were all set for the next Touch to have a camera. The 16GB model was dropped and out came a 64GB version of the iPod Touch.

The new iPod Touch also boasts of speeds equivalent to that of the iPhone 3GS.

I'm glad I didn't sell my 2G to buy a 3G like a lot of people did. Its not time yet. Maybe next year. So much for the awaited iPod Touch 3G Information.

The latest update of the iPod Facebook application has a bug! And a very significant one at that.

The latest update of the Facebook App has a bug on the birthday part. Apparently, months and dates corresponding to the same number generates this error. Example: September (9th month) 9 (9th day of the month). This is true to January first, February the second, March third and so on.

When you scroll to September 9th (for example) it will give back all the birthday celebrants that has the 9th of the month as their birth date regardless of the month. Simply put, when you scroll to Sept. 9 - it will give you the birthday celebrants of January 9, February 9, March 9 and so on.

We have TuneWiki for the iPod Touch. A jampacked application full of neat features.

I feature very few applications here because I want these features to be about quality and not quantity. I will only feature exceptional material I find.

Anyway.

TuneWiki is a Next Generation Social Media player; it promotes a social network that allows users to add, edit and synchronize lyrics to audio and video files in all languages; and displays location based charts and maps of music played around the globe.

TuneWiki provides lyrics for the songs on your device. The lyrics scroll automatically to match the song. I have never seen any other application do this anywhere else. It can also potentially translate any the song to any language as it is wiki-powered.

The application fetches the lyrics from their database and sends it to your phone as you play the song so you have to be connected through WiFi when you are using this.

There are also lots of additional features. It also has a geo feature wherein you can check out where else in the world the song you are listening to is being played. Another cool geo feature is that it shows what songs people near you are being played as well as songs being played on popular cities.

It also has charts for top artists and top songs by country.

Even more, it can also fetch videos of the song you are playing from YouTube. Aside from YouTube integration, it also has Blip support.

Aside from normal songs on your device, it can also provide lyrics and support from internet radio.

To as it is wiki-powered, you can submit your own lyrics for any song on their website. You just have to sign-up.

Here are a few pointers to look at when buying iPod Touch Cases. There are lots of cases out there and they are not cheap. Its really annoying when you get home and realize you don't really like the case you bought.

1. Do Your Research: Check any reviews that might be available on YouTube. There are a ton of videos available there and some of them might be enough for you to decide which case to buy. But some of these reviews might be sponsored by the makers so it might be biased. Ask your friends for first-hand experiences. Maybe even borrow a case for a few days if possible so that you'll have personal experience.

2. Check the corners, sides or any areas where DUST might settle. Cases are supposed to be on all the time. If there are areas gathering dust, it's gonna be bad for your device. Ensure that there are no areas or very minimal areas gathering dust.

3. Check the possibility of a heat problem. The iPod Touch has a problem of heating up sometimes and picking a bad case can contribute to this problem. If your device heats up more often and gets hotter than usual, its gonna be ultimately bad for your device.

4. Check how the case syncs with your screen protector. Some cases doesn't fit snugly with some screen protectors and ruins the screen protector's edges.

5. Get a very good feel of the case. Ensure that you like the texture and the finish of the case on your hand. You are going to be holding the case all the time and you have to be sure that your hand feels perfectly comfortable with it.

6. Check the holes for the volume, the 30-pin connector, the 3.5 mm jack, the volume and the power - yes, all of them. Make sure that all connectors or wires can be easily plugged in or removed when the case is on and all the buttons are easily accessible.

Most skin protectors are very much alike as there are not really a lot of variation you can do with them. As long as they do the job - protect the screen and keep it as clear and invisible as possible, your screen protector are pretty much very good. But these ones broke from the norm and brought exciting features on the standard screen protector.

Yes, it is for the iPhone and there is no iPod Touch counterpart yet. But I just thought that this is so cool that you might want to check it out.

The screen protectors are from PhoneDevil.com and they have three kinds - the Clear, Mirror and Privacy edition. The Clear edition is of course, just a normal clear screen protector.

The Mirror edition makes your phone look like a mirror when it is not lit up. It looks like one of those sticker-mirrors but its very shiny and looks really sweet. Its drawback is that it doesn't look very well under sunlight - its kind of hard to see the screen when exposed to heavy light. Lookie see:

The Privacy edition is my favorite. Its like the privacy screen guards for computers wherein only the user right in front of the screen can see the display. People beside and behind the user will not be able to see the display. A very practical and useful screen protector. It also has a different feel than a normal screen protector.

iTunes 9 is rumored to host a bunch of new features like Blu-ray, Twitter and App Organization.

Not a very big fan of iTunes, I am still excited to see what Apple will come up with next month. With the reported camera on the iPod Touch 3G, a more improved iTunes won't hurt as well. What is exciting for me is iTunes 9's said ability to visually organize your apps on your iPod Touch / iPhone. App synchronization still needs a lot of work on the current and previous versions of iTunes and we hope to see a lot of improvement with the upcoming installment.

One thing I'd really like Apple to fix though is iTunes has been, well... relatively slow. But with these exciting news, I can put up with it a bit more.

Who came up with the term ITOUCH? Apple certainly didn't. There's no such thing as iNano or iShuffle. And I am pretty sure that the iPhone is not an iPod phone. So there is no reason to call the iPod Touch an iTouch.

While it is still barely acceptable for me, I can see other people calling getting really annoyed with the term iTouch. After all, the manufacturer didn't come up with it and is certainly not promoting it. And I don't know, it kind of sounds perverted. iTouch.

Its called iWoopie. It lets you browse YouTube videos on your iPod and download them directly without going into your computer. It does freeze up a little more often than the usual app but it is definitely worth checking out because it is FREE.

Apple tried to silence owner of exploding iPod with gagging order

Apple attempted to silence a father and daughter with a gagging order after the child’s iPod music player exploded and the family sought a refund from the company.

The Times has learnt that the company would offer the family a full refund only if they were willing to sign a settlement form. The proposed agreement left them open to legal action if they ever disclosed the terms of the settlement.

The case echoes previous circumstances in which Apple attempted to hush up incidents when its devices overheated.

Ken Stanborough, 47, from Liverpool, dropped his 11-year-old daughter Ellie’s iPod Touch last month. “It made a hissing noise,” he said. “I could feel it getting hotter in my hand, and I thought I could see vapour”. Mr Stanborough said he threw the device out of his back door, where “within 30 seconds there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air”.

Mr Stanborough contacted Apple and Argos, where he had bought the device for £162. After being passed around several departments, he spoke to an Apple executive on the telephone. As a result of the conversation, Apple sent a letter to Mr Stanborough denying liability but offering a refund.

The letter also stated that, in accepting the money, Mr Stanborough was to “agree that you will keep the terms and existence of this settlement agreement completely confidential”, and that any breach of confidentiality “may result in Apple seeking injunctive relief, damages and legal costs against the defaulting persons or parties”.

“I thought it was a very disturbing letter,” said Mr Stanborough, who is self-employed and works in electronic security. He refused to sign it.

GENERAL

* If you're scrolling through a long document/page in an application - if you tap the status bar (the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery), the application will automatically scroll up to the top of the document/page.
* To take a screenshot of any screen of your iPod (including the lock screen), hold the power and home buttons and release them. A white flash will appear on screen and a screenshot will appear in your Photos application.
* If your iPod is frozen and will not respond, you can force reboot by holding the power and home buttons until your device turns off. Please note that this is not recommended and is the equivalent of pulling the cord out of your computer to turn it off.
* Need a spare cleaning cloth for your touch, or an extra cloth to rest your iPod touch on while at work or school? Just go to your local vision care store (or pharmacy) and get an eyeglass/sunglass "cleaning cloth". Cheap and works great!

MEDIA

* Double tapping the home button in any application, or with the screen off will bring up the music controls.
* When watching a video, tap to bring up the onscreen controls. When you are done watching a video make sure you press done so your progress will be saved.
* When listening to an audiobook, iTunes and your iPod create a new chapter list unrelated to the subject of the book. It's accessible using the same control used for viewing audio tracks (upper right of screen).
* When playing media, press and hold the forward button to incrementally increase the speed of playback. When the media is paused, holding the fast forward button will make the media play slower.
* When listening to music, double tap the album artwork to have it flip over. You can then view the track listing of the album.
* If you pull your headphones out of the socket, any currently playing media will pause.
* If you would like to view the lyrics of a song (if you've added lyrics), by tapping the album art on the Now Playing screen.
* When playing media, you can tap the screen once and scrub to move to that time in the media. Move up on the screen to move through faster, and move down to scrub slower.

BATTERY

* Turn off WiFi to save battery power when not in use.
* Make sure to completely close apps when you are done with them to save battery power. This is accomplished by pressing and holding the home button for approximately five seconds. This boosts battery life big time if you run lots of different apps all the time.
* You can charge your iPod Touch from any fully powered USB 2.0 port. A PS2 does not have a fully powered USB 2.0 port. Ports that will work include a computer, printer, or a media centre. The device does not have to have iTunes installed to provide power to your iPod Touch.
* To improve battery life, turn down brightness through the Settings application.

HOME SCREEN

* If you would like to rearrange your Home Screen icons, tap and hold an icon until they all start to wiggle. Drag the icons around to rearrange them, and when it is satisfactory, press the home button.
* Websites without an icon will just be a screenshot for webclips, for websites like this zoom into an area of the site you would like the webclip icon to look like... ex. zoom into the website logo and that will be the webclip icon.
* Press the home button while on the home screen, and it will return to the initial home screen. When on the initial home screen (only on 3.0), tap the home button to go to the search function. Press it again to return to the initial home screen.
* Instead of sliding across the page, tapping imediately left or right of the page dots on the Home Screen and Weather will move to the next page.

KEYBOARD

* When typing a lot of text in Safari turn it to horizontal view. The keyboard will be bigger and you can get a better grip of the Touch while typing with two thumbs.
* When typing, if you press the space bar twice after a word it will insert a period and another space.
* When using the keyboard, if you hold the delete key down for about 3 seconds it will change from deleting letters to deleting words.
* Holding down letters on the keyboard will pop up the accents/symbols associated with those letters. Once it pops up, slide your finger over to the accent/symbol you like.
* When typing if you want to add something from the numbers keyboard just hold down the numbers and slide your finger to the number or symbol you want, and release. It will take you back to your letters keyboard. This way you dont have to tap numbers, tap your number, then tap numbers again to go back. This also applies for using the 'shift' key to apply capital letters.
* Make a spelling mistake? Press and hold the word you spelt wrong and a magnifying glass will appear. Slide your finger back and forwth to move the cursor.

SAFARI

* When in Safari, if you are presented with a link, hold your finger over the link, and a bubble will appear showing the URL that the link is tied to.
* In Safari since you can't open links in a new windows, you can open a new page, tap the bookmarks icon, tap the history folder and direct yourself to the last page you were just on and tap the link from there. You can also use a javascript bookmarklet called Tabulate.
* When you're on a website that has a frame or an iframe with scrollbars in it, use two fingers on that frame to scroll that window and back to a single finger to scroll the whole page.
* If you would like to save an image from the web, simply tap and hold the image to save it.
* In Safari double tap to zoom in or out. You can also "pinch" (putting your thumb and index finger on the screen and pinching in and out) to zoom in Safari, Maps, and in Pictures.

OTHER APPS

* Whilst in Mail's inbox view, sliding your finger from left to right on a message the 'delete' button will appear. This also applies in the list view of the Videos application. You can also delete Mail in bulk by tapping 'edit' and selecting the Mail you want to have deleted.
* In Google Maps, double tapping zooms in as expected, but single tapping with two fingers zooms out.
* The 'Notes' application is an easy way to draft mail. The 'mail' icon provides a link to iPhone's Mail and saved contacts.
* To use a scientific calculator, simply enter the Calculator application, and turn the device sideways.

How To Maximize The Battery Life of Your iPod Touch 2G

Tips on how you can save lengthen the battery life of your iPod Touch.

* Keep backlight brightness it as low as possible. Enable Auto-Brightness on the Settings.
* Do not use the Loud Speaker as much as possible.
* Turn off the equalizer if you don't need it.
* Turn off WiFi, Bluetooth and Location Services when not in use.
* Do not activate as much automatic settings as possible. (like automatic email downloads)
* Keep your iPod cool. Stay within the allowed temperature.*
* Try draining your battery completely then charging it to 100% at least once a month.
* Kill off applications running in the background by holding the Home key for at least five seconds. You'll know you've done this when the screen flashes quickly.
* Keep your Firmware up-to-date so that the iPod is working more efficiently. (newer firmware - better code - less processor work - less heat and battery consumption)
* Maximize your video files before transferring to the iPod for viewing.
* If you can use lower quality songs (lower bitrate), that will be better for the battery too.
* Charge as often as possible. This prevents erosion and decay on the battery.

A few more reminders:

Despite how good Apple says your battery is, there are a few things that eat up battery life like crazy. Internet surfing will drain your battery in an hour or two. Graphic-intensive and processor-intensive applications (games) eat up battery life within a couple of hours as well.

The Apple App Store rejected the Google Voice Application. Though the iPhone and iPod Touch has YouTube and Google Maps applications pre-installed on each device, Apple (and AT&T?) decided that they can't allow Google Voice to run on the popular smartphone and music player.

Google Voice is a free Internet service that uses VoIP technology to link phone numbers together. GrandCentral was relaunched as Google Voice on March 11, 2009 with new features, including voicemail transcriptions and SMS managing.

Google has official Google Voice Apps running on the BlackBerry and Android. But Apple banned the application saying it has “duplicate features that come with the iPhone.”

Strong as the App Store is, its reasons like these things that are making people jailbreak their devices. This is a BIG fail for Apple.

iPod Touch 3G Gets Camera

Pictures of cases from China for the rumored iPod Touch 3G to be released on September shows that the next addition to the Touch family will be sporting a camera.

Unlike the iPhone, the Touch's camera will be on the center top just beside the WiFi antenna. Hopefully it will have all the camera features that came with the iPhone 3Gs with Firmware 3.0.

Tap to focus.

iPhone uses iTunes to sync the photos you have in iPhoto on a Mac or in Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop Album on a PC. All the photos on your computer sync to your iPhone, so you can look at them — and share them — anywhere you go.

Looks promising, I am particularly excited about the tap-to-focus function. I think its the first I ever saw that on a camera. Though I wont be giving up my trusty camera for this, I am very excited if this will come into fruition this September.

iPod Touch Essential Video Download and Conversion Tools

I have discussed how to maximize your video for iPod Touch. Here are some tools that I use.

To grab videos from the Internet, I use Video Download Helper. It works with YouTube and pretty much every popular online video service. (does not work with Hulu though) It has conversion functions but I don't use it because it looks too complicated and there is a registration process.

To rip video files off DVD's, I use a free software called Handbrake.

I use Total Video Converter. Grab a stand-alone copy here. No installation, just launch the .exe file. It's simple enough for those with no video c0nversion background to understand. It can also convert across video and audio formats. But for some reason files converted to mp3 using this software is not recognizable by iTunes and thus the iPod.

For that, I use a Free Conversion Software.

Another tool I use is Clipnabber. It rips videos off YouTube and other video sites too. It has an auto-convert to MP4 download. Another good web-based converter is Media-Convert. Though it has an 80% success rate and doesn't support ID3 tag editing, still pretty useful for smaller files. I don't recommend using this if you're converting whole movies especially if you have a less-than-desirable Internet connection.

Maximize your Video for iPod Touch | Resolution and Quality VS File Size.

The iPod Touch has one of the best screens for a mobile device on the market today.

* 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
* 480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 pixels per inch

It is just so sweet.

Native video resolutions and configurations sometimes need proper conversion to maximize the file efficiency and viewing quality. That is, getting the best possible quality for the least possible file size. Because lets face it, the iPod Touch's low disk space is on of its major let-downs. Its hard to keep a lot of stuff on one cool device.
Anyway. Lets start.

Take note of the resolution - 480 x 320 pixels - this is very important. When you are converting video files for viewing on the iPod Touch, ensure that the resolution of the resulting video is less than the iPod's. Higher resolutions will most likely still be playable, but you wont notice too much of a difference since the device wont be able to display the additional pixels anyway - it'll just fit everything in its 480 x 320 screen. No use cramming up 720 pixels of video on 480 pixel screen right? Sometimes, it can actually be worse if the resolution is too high as it takes more processing power (generates more heat, shortens battery life) to play. But then again, if you choose a resolution that is too low, you are not maximizing the device's full potential.

To maximize file size efficiency, determine the original resolution of the video. I do this by opening the file in Media Player Classic and pressing Shift + F10 then going to the Details Tab. You can use other means if you want to, this is just the easiest for me.

Remember our device's resolution - 480 (width) x 320 (height). If the height and width of the original video is smaller than 480 x 320, no need to make adjustments on the resolution. This is the case for most regular videos downloaded from YouTube or other online video services. Same is true for simple video cameras or video captured from phones.

But the example above (720 x 540) needs to be scaled down. Again, the height and the width of the video needs to be less than or equal to the iPod's resolution. We need to scale the video to a resolution closest to 480 x 320.

But do not just directly convert to 480 x 320. When scaling down, the proportion of the width to the height needs to be retained. Depending on the original resolution, it can create an undesirable stretching effect if you just directly convert to 480 x 320.

To properly scale down, just divide the height and width of the video by the same number so that the width is less than or equal to 480 and the height is less than or equal to 320.

Example:

Divide the height and width by 2.

720 / 2 = 360. This is the width

540 / 2 = 270. This is the height.

Resulting resolution will be 360 x 270. Although this will save a lot of disk space, you will not be able to maximize the iPod's screen.

Lets use 1.5

720 / 1.5 = 480

540 / 1.5 = 360

Though the width (480) will fit perfectly on the iPod's screen, the height (360) is too tall. It will work, but this will not get us the best file size to quality efficiency.

Lets use 1.7

720 / 1.7 = approx 424

540 / 1.7 = approx 318

Resolution 424 x 318 would be our ideal choice. Its not too tall nor too wide for the iPod's screen. But it still uses up the iPod's screen to its full potential based on the original file's resolution.

Depending on your original resolution, you will sometimes have black bars on the sides or on the top and bottom. This is normal as we don't want to undesirably stretch the video as shown above. If you are really saving up on disk space, yo can scale down to much lower than 480 x 320 but you will be compromising the quality.

Other factors to consider are audio/video bitrate and frame rate. Higher bitrate of course, means better sound quality. Normal audio bitrate is 192 kbps (near CD quality sound). Lower the bitrate if you want to save more disk space (this works for songs too). Up to 128 kbps is considered acceptable. I prefer to leave the frame rate as it is because I noticed that bitrate and resolution affects the file size more.

You'd have to play with the settings of your video converter and DVD ripper in order for you to get the your desired results. Ill try to post software and methods I use to put videos on my iPod.

PS: This concept is applicable for all devices. Just find out what your device's screen resolution is then follow the same process.

How To Update to iPod Touch OS 3.0 For Free

Reminder:
If you are using a laptop, ensure it is plugged in to the power or it has sufficient battery life.

Here is how you can update your iPod Touch OS to Firmware 3.0 without coughing up the $10.

1. Download and install iTunes (at least 8.2)

2. Get the iPod Touch OS 3.0 for 1G or 2G. (make sure you get a .ipsw file. If you get a .zip file, just unzip it to get the .ipsw file)

3. Connect your iPod Touch and launch iTunes.

4. Select your iPod Touch

5. Hold the SHIFT button and click Check for Update.

You will be prompted to look for a file. Locate and select the .ipsw file you downloaded in Step 2. Do not disconnect until iTunes has finished updating your iPod Touch.

Enjoy the 3.0 Firmware.

iPod Touch 2G OS 3.0 Update Now Avaiable!

The iPod Touch 2G (and 1G) OS 3.0 is now available. I just updated mine:

Though I had to do it using non-traditional methods. I noticed that the WiFi signal became weaker based on the top display. But it is too early to comment on the performance. I'm just happy to get the Spotlight search feature, Bluetooth support and Cut-Copy-Paste function.

iPod Touch 2G Review

I love it.

PRO's:

The touchscreen is super responsive. It multi-touch, its intuitive, its perfect. I am actually having difficulty using other touchscreen devices. More with the screen - it is very vibrant. At 320 x 480 px, I expect nothing less. It is perfect for games and video.

Music playing is also easy to learn unlike with other Ipods. (admit it, you had difficulty using your first Ipod ^.^) The touchscreen made it all easier. Music quality will of course depend on your music files and the all important earphones. Speaking of, I am going to put the earphones in the Pro's section. Its not the best I know. But considering its stock earphones, I love it. Lets just say that i dont plan to get Senheisers or Philips earphones just yet. I also like the fact that it doesn't tangle too much. Unlike the cellphone earphones I was using with my phones.

Free Apps from the AppStore are golden. Most of the really good ones are to be bought. (of course nothing is free) My worst pain here is the Pocketguitar application. Its $0.99 on the AppStore and I don't have a credit card and I am not planning to get one. I guess I'll just wait for it to be free. But again the free Apps more than makes up for it with a huge selection of applications to choose from.

The WiFi is also something to take note of. Its super fast for a mobile device. (I had a P1i to compare it with) Ipod's internet is super fast and supports multi-tab browsing in Safari. One downside is when I try to update the Apps via Wifi, it sometimes get stuck (it happens when I'm updating like 13 apps at a time haha.)

Charging time is also sweet. Max I have charged is three hours. Syncing takes a while to get used to. You have to familiarize yourself with iTunes first, but once you get used to it, its a breeze.

CON's:

The battery life sucks. Seriously. This is a major turn-off for any gadget. It lasts only a few hours with Wifi, gaming or video. This is something I am really uncomfortable with. Max you can get with these activities is three hours.

I am also having a hard time creating a video play list. I just don't know how and why but i can't create video play lists.

Due to the tsunami of radio applications out there, its virtually impossible for Apple to include a good-old FM Tuner on the iPod. I don't know, sometimes I just want the option of being able to listen to good-old FM radio without having to connect to a WiFi spot.

Those are my major disappointments.

A few more details about the Ipod touch. I am not going to Jailbreak my Ipod. No matter how "cool" some people think it is. I just wont. I don't see any reason why people would still get cracked Apps for their Ipods when they usually cost not more than a few dollars. If you like it, buy it. There's a difference in being practical and just being a plain cheapskate.
